For sale is an amazing antique BORDEN’S COTTAGE CHEESE STONEWARE CROCK.  This crock has the following crisp cobalt blue lettering: “Borden’s Country Made Cottage Cheese”. The crock is in excellent condition with no cracks or hairlines. The bottom of the crock is marked “5 – H”.  This jar measures 5 1/4 inches tall and 7 1/4 inches diameter. This jar is believed to date to the 1920s or 1930s. This jar may have been used a grocer’s dairy display to hold Borden’s cottage cheese. The customer would spoon out the cottage cheese into a paper carton to purchase.  While Borden’s is a national chain, this dairy crock is typically found in Michigan since Borden’s major plants were located in Saginaw & Detroit, Michigan. A top notch advertising pottery collectible.

The company prospered during the Civil War by selling condensed milk to Union armies. In 1899, the company changed its name to Borden’s Condensed Milk Company. In 1919, the name changed again to the Borden Company and expanded rapidly, buying numerous dairies, ice cream manufacturers, cheese producers, and mincemeat processors.
