For sale is a vintage GILBERT BROTHERS straight edge razor. The tang is stamped “Gilbert Brothers Manufacturers Sheffield, England”. The razor has a 3/4” wide mirrored blade. Full hollow blade is in great condition. The handle is in fair condition. The straight razor is about 6 1/2 inches in length closed or 10 inches open. This razor is believed to date to the late 1800s. Straight edge razors are also called open razors and cut-throat razors. A nice collectible straight edge razor.

By 1839, James and William Gilbert were manufacturers of razors and strops in Sheffield, England. In 1844, the partnership dissolved and James became a book and print seller. William continued the Gilbert Brothers Company and employed six men. The firm’s ‘superior razors’ received an Honorable Mention at the 1851 Great Exhibition. According to the Census in 1861, William Gilbert employed 20 men and three boys.
