The ancient technique of repoussé is a method for decorating metals in which parts of the design are raised in relief from the back or the inside of the article. The design features are created using hammers and punches to create definition. Additional detail can then be added from the front by engraving. The name repoussé is derived from the French word pousser which means “to push forward.” From the 16th through the 18th centuries, this technique was popular throughout Europe.
