Ginger Beer was stored in Stoneware bottles as far back as the 1830’s. The bottles were hand thrown by potters to very individualistic standards and were made with little more than the bottler’s name and city. By the 1880’s, due to growing industrialization, the grey glazed bottles with stamped logos started to appear. These more modern, still hand thrown but made to much more precise standards and included stamped designs such as men on bicycles, steam locomotives, moose, black bears, or anything to attract the buyer’s interest. By the 1920s, stone ginger beer bottles faded in use due to several issues. Customers started questioning the sediments at the bottoms of the bottles and wanted their beverages in clear glassware so they could see first hand the bottle’s cleanliness. Further, with refrigeration becoming the norm, the benefit of stoneware keeping liquids cool wasn’t as necessary.
