For sale is a stunning cast iron Antique Industrial FAIRBANKS PLATFORM SCALE. The platform on this scale has a raised embossed maker’s mark that is accented in gold leaf. This general store counter top scale is in working condition but in order to use it to weigh items you would need to locate the correct weight hanger and a set of counter weights for the scale. The hanger included with this scale is the correct type of hanger that would have been used but it was not designed for use with this scale model. Scale is rust free and looks great from all angles. The brass cross bar has a nice shine to it. Vinyl decals along the sides of the platform are not original to the scale. The scale is believed to date to the late 1800s or early 1900s. The scale stands 27 inches tall, 22 inches wide, and 26 inches deep. A top notch vintage industrial scale.

In 1824, Thaddeus and Erastus Fairbanks formed the E & T Fairbanks Company in St. Johnsbury, Vermont. Since current weighing systems yielded inaccurate results, Thaddeus decided to invent a new, more dependable weighing machine. In 1830, Thaddeus built his first real scale and applied for a patent. Shortly after the end of the Civil War, Fairbanks was turning out 4,000 scales a month to meet worldwide demand.
