For sale is an early 1970s FLATSY ALI FASHION DOLL from the Ideal Toy Company. This groovy early 1970s doll is wearing a MOD style orange miniskirt and a white undergarment. The doll has bright red hair, green eyes and long eye lashes. The bendable doll is posable and in excellent condition. The doll’s neck has small crack from use. The doll is about 8 1/2 inches in length. I wonder if the flat doll was inspired by the rail thin models of the day such as Twiggy were pop culture icons in the late 1960s around the time the doll was designed. A great collectible doll which captures the distinctive 1960s counter-culture vibe.

In 1903, Morris and Rose Michtom founded the Ideal Novelty and Toy Company in Brooklyn, NY. The company’s first big hit was the teddy bear which was inspired by President Teddy Roosevelt. Ideal quickly expanded into the country’s premier toy manufacturer, enjoying success with dolls such as the Betsy Wetsy and Tammy.

All Flatsy dolls are flat but these unique dolls come in three sizes, the 2 inch Mini, the 4 1/2 inch tall Standard size of 4 1/2″ and the 8 inch tall Fashion dolls. They are marked on their back or imprinted “Ideal 1969”. All dolls were bendable vinyl and have hair colors of: black, blue, brown, Gray or Lavender, Green, Orange, light and dark Pink, Purple and Yellow.
