For sale is a vintage 1962 VERNORS GINGER ALE SODA BOTTLE from Detroit, Michigan. This 12 ounce bottle has yellow and green ACL text and graphics. The text on the bottle reads: “VERNORS – A Ginger Flavored Soft Drink – Flavor Aged 4 Years in Wood – Contains carbonated water, sugar, natural and artificial flavorings, caramel coloring, and citric acid – contents 12 Fl ozs. – formulated and bottled by Vernors Ginger Ale, Inc, Detroit, Mich”. No cracks or flea bites to the bottle but there is minor surface wear and flaws. The bottom of the bottle is marked with “62” which indicates a 1962 bottling date. Bottle stands about 9 3/4 inches tall. A great soda bottle collectible.
Vernors Ginger Ale is one of the oldest soft drinks in the United States, and is considered America’s oldest surviving soft drink. Between 1866 and 1880, James Vernor, a pharmacist from Detroit, Michigan, created Vernor’s Ginger Ale. While working as a junior clerk at Higby and Sterns’ Drug Store, he created the drink while experimenting with creating a stomach tonic containing ginger, spices, and vanilla. In 1959, Vernor’s Ginger Ale dropped the apostrophe from the brand name. A bottle with the “Vernor’s” name would be bottled prior to 1959.
