For sale is a working 1940s HEAVY DUTY WOODWARD LOTHROP PRECISION SEWING MACHINE manufactured in Japan. The sewing machine runs well. Machine comes with the foot pedal, carrying case, original operating manual, some extra needles, and parts. The Woodward and Lothrop Department store licensed a Japanese manufacturer to build these sewing machines for sale in their stores. This sewing machine probably dates to the 1940s and is in excellent condition. The electrical cord is not frayed or broken. A great vintage heavy duty sewing machine.
In 1873, Samuel Walter Woodward and Alvin Mason Lothrop opened a dry goods store in Chelsea, Massachusetts, and maintained several stores in the Boston area. In partnership with Charles E. Cochrane, on February 8, 1880 they moved to Washington, DC. The first store was so successful that within a year, they moved to a larger location at 921 Pennsylvania Avenue. After flooding in 1886, they moved again to the corner of 11th and F Streets NW. Woodward and Lothrop purchased Cochrane’s share of the partnership, and the new store was renamed Woodward & Lothrop.
