For sale is a vintage Medical Advertising Tin – REXALL COLD TABLETS SPECIAL made by the United Drug Company. This color lithograph tin contained 3/4 grain ACETANILID tablets. The tin is in very good condition with minor surface wear. This small medical tin measures about 2 1/4″ by 1 1/2″.

Acetanilide was introduced into medical practice in 1886. However, decades later, due to unacceptable toxic effects, the most alarming being liver and kidney damage, it’s medicinal use was discontinued. So it’s a good thing this tin was sold with a money back guarantee.

In 1902, Louis K. Liggett persuaded 40 druggists to invest in a drug company that would manufacture and distribute products in franchised stores. In 1903, the United Drug Company at Northeastern University in Boston. United Drug Stores licensed the Rexall brand name to as many as 12,000 drug stores across the United States from 1920 to 1977. The “Rex” in the name came from the common Rx abbreviation for drug prescriptions.
