In 1919, Pat Sullivan and Otto Messmer created the Felix the Cat cartoon character during the silent film era. Felix was the first fully realized animal character in the history of American film animation. Felix is often considered one of the most recognized cartoon characters in film history. By 1923, the character was at the peak of his film career. Felix in Hollywood, a short released during that year, plays upon Felix’s popularity, as he becomes acquainted with such fellow celebrities as Douglas Fairbanks, Cecil B. DeMille, and Charlie Chaplin.
