For sale is a vintage ADVERTISING MATCH STICK HOLDER promoting the Kennedy Produce Company, Wheeling, W. Va. This tin wall mounted holder is rust free and in great condition for its age. The front panel is worn but includes the following text: “Kennedy Produce Co – Butter, Butterine & Eggs – 23 (illegible) and Both Markets – Churngold Butterine – Better than Butter – Coffee Roasted Daily”. This match holder probably dates to the 1930s because this in the decade when Churchgold Butterine was marketed. This black tin measures about 6 inches tall with a 3 inch square base. A great tobacco related collectible advertising tin.

Butterine was imitation butter substitute made form animal fat with some other intermixed ingredients. Today, its known as margarine. Margarine was invented by a French chemist in 1869, when fats and oils were scarce in Western Europe. It was originally an extract from animal fat, but today margarine is mostly made from vegetable oils, including corn, cottonseed, safflower, soy and sunflower.
