For sale is a 1960s HERCULES HS6 DRY CELL BATTERY made by Union Carbide Corporation, NY, NY. This giant 1 1/2 volt battery is untested and measures approximately 6 1/2 inches tall. The battery has some minor staining to the paper wrapping. These type of batteries were commonly used in radios, telephones, lanterns, doorbells, clocks, toy motors, Christmas lights, and many other devices dating from the late 1890’s through the 1960’s. An interesting vintage technology collectible.
On November 1, 1917, the Union Carbide Company and the National Carbon Company merged to create the Union Carbide and Carbon Corporation. In 1957, the company changed its name to “Union Carbide Corporation”. In the late 1950s, the alkaline battery by the Eveready Battery Company (now Energizer) started to replace the dry cell.
