In 1881, Jordan W. Lambert founded the Lambert Pharmacal Company after licensing the Listerine formula. Listerine was originally marketed as a surgical antiseptic and named after Sir Joseph Lister, an English surgeon who pioneered antiseptic surgery. In 1955, the Lambert Pharmacal Company merged with the Warner Company to form the Warner-Lambert Pharmaceutical Company.
