For sale is a vintage 1940s GILLETTE DOUBLE EDGE TECH SAFETY RAZOR. This shaver is in great mechanical condition with nothing bent or broken. Razor disassembles into three different pieces. Razor shows minor surface wear consistent with its age. The razor is about 3 1/4 inches in length. Gillette Tech closed comb (solid oval guard) three piece razors without a date code were made between 1947 and 1951. A Gillette Blue Blade Razor that is marked with a patent number that was filed in 1951. A great collectible vintage razor.
Between 1904 and 1921, all Gillette razors were marked with serial numbers. Between 1921 until 1931 (except for a period in 1927-28), Gillette deluxe models included serial numbers. The serial numbers were on the top of the guard, or sometimes the inner barrel. Between 1931 until 1951, the razors were not marked with a serial number. Gillette Date Codes were used from January 1951 until 2001 and are found in the top left and right corners on the underside of razor guards.
Between 1800 and 1900 was the “Golden Era” of the straight edge razor. Men went to barbers to have their mustaches and beards carefully trimmed. In 1901, King C. Gillette fundamentally transformed shaving with the invention of the first safety razor, which was granted a patent on November 15th, 1904. With the advent of the safety razor, a man did not need to send his straight edge razor to the barber for sharpening. The idea of clamping a smaller version of a straight edge onto a handle was genius – the blade was easier to control, which resulted in fewer nicks and cuts, and was replaceable when it became dull.
