For sale is a very early general store counter 1926 PLANTERS MR. PEANUT jar. I believe this was the first glass jar to feature Mr. Peanut. This large octagon jar with a glass lid has an embossed Mr. Peanut on 4 different sides. The jar also features the following text: “PLANTERS PENNANT 5 cents PEANUTS” and “SOLD ONLY IN PRINTED PLANTERS RED PENNANT BAGS”. The inside of the jar lid and top lid of the jar has small chips or flea bites. These small defects are not visible when the lid is in place. Jar measures about 8 inches in diameter and stands about 12 and 1/2 inches tall with the lid on.
Planters Peanut Company was founded in 1906. In 1916, a 14-year-old Suffolk boy submitted to the company multiple drawings of a peanut with a cane, in a variety of poses, for which he received five dollars. A professional commercial artist added spats, a top hat, and a monocle to the drawing, and Mr. Peanut was born. He is now one of the best-known icons in advertising history.
