For sale is an original 1920s era HINDS HONEY & ALMOND CREAM BOTTLE. This rectangular clear glass screw top bottle is in excellent condition. The bottom of the bottle measures 1 3/4 inches by 1 inch. The bottle stands 3 3/4 inches tall. The front panel of the bottle is marked “HINDS HONEY AND ALMOND CREAM – A S HINDS CO., BLOOMFIELD N.J., USA”. A great apothecary collectible.

Hinds Honey and Almond Cream was a skin cream that was marketed as “not only improves the complexion but keeps the arms and hands attractive. It softens the cuticle in manicuring and relieves tenderness. Men use it after shaving for skin-comfort, to soften and heal.”

In 1862, Mr. Aurelius Stone Hinds moved to Portland, Maine to work as a clerk for H. H. Hays & Co.’s apothecary store. In 1870, he perfects his “Hinds’ Honey and Almond Cream” formula. In 1875, he forms the A. S. Hinds Company. In the early 1900s, A. S. Hinds Co. produced a series of twenty-four colorful lithographed poster stamps to market their “Hinds’ Honey and Almond Cream” product. Because this bottle was manufactured in Bloomfield, New Jersey, the bottle would have been made following the 1907 Lehn & Fink, Inc. acquisition of A. S. Hinds Co. In the early 1920s, Lehn & Fink started making this product in Bloomfield, N.J. This bottle for sale would have been made during the 1920s or later. In 1929, net sales of Hinds Honey & Almond Cream reached their highest point. Sales and profits declined steadily after this due to competition from hand lotions such as Jergen’s Lotion. In 1941, Hinds Honey and Almond Cream was renamed as Hinds Honey and Almond Fragrance Cream to avoid misbranding notices from American Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
