For sale is a 1901 RAILROAD FREIGHT BILL from the Norfolk & Western Railway Company. The shipper, Mr. H.L. Meuafer of Sperryville, Virginia paid a total of $.64 to ship 200 pound of freight on March 11, 1901 from the Elgin, VA station. The receipt is in very good condition and measures 10 inches by 5 1/2 inches. An interesting railroad collectible.
The Norfolk and Western (N&W) Railway was formed by more than 200 railroad mergers between 1838 and 1982. The railroad was headquartered in Roanoke, Virginia, for most of its existence. Its motto was “Precision Transportation” and it had a variety of nicknames, including “King Coal” even it used mostly steam powered engines. During the Civil War, the N&W was the biggest railroad in the south and moved most of the products with their steam locomotives to help the South the best way they could.
