Shirley Temple Black (April 23, 1928 – February 10, 2014) was an American actress, singer, dancer, businesswoman, and diplomat who was Hollywood’s number one box-office draw as a child actress from 1934 to 1938. As an adult, she was named United States ambassador to Ghana and to Czechoslovakia. Temple began her film career at the age of three in 1931. Her signature song, “On the Good Ship Lollipop”, was introduced in the film and sold 500,000 sheet-music copies. She appeared in 29 films from the ages of 3 to 10 but in only 14 films from the ages of 14 to 21. Temple retired from film in 1950 at the age of 22.

The Shirley Temple movie “The Little Colonel” tales place in the years following the civil war. A Southern belle marries a northerner, Jack Sherman. The woman’s father Colonel Lloyd (Lionel Barrymore) disowns her in anger and retaliation. The couple move west where they become parents of a girl they name Lloyd Sherman (Shirley Temple). Six years later, Lloyd Sherman is made an honorary colonel in the Army. Elizabeth returns to the south with little Lloyd and settles in a cottage near Colonel Lloyd’s mansion. When Colonel Lloyd discovers his daughter living in the neighborhood, he treats her with disdain.
