For sale is a 1950s era BRIGGS TOBACCO TIN made by the P. Lorillard Company. This red lithograph tin with a hinged lid is very good condition with great graphics. Both sides of this tin features a great graphic of a hand holding a smoking pipe and the slogan “when a feller needs a friend”. The tin measures about 4 3/8 inches by 3 inches by 1 inch. This tin includes the tax blue internal revenue tax stamp. In 1901, the IRS started requiring tax stamps to be placed on the tobacco product which continued until 1966. This tax stamp features a portrait of J.D. Adams and was required on tobacco products which contain 1 5/8 ounces. The bottom tin has a striker plate for matches. A great tobacco collectible tin.

Union Leader tobacco was a leading cut plug tobacco manufactured by Pierre Lorillard, a French immigrant who began making snuff in New York City in 1760. Tobacco tins were commonly used by miners who would chew tobacco instead of smoking it due to the fire risk. Shortly after 1890, the P. Lorillard Co. Inc. was absorbed by American Tobacco Co. It became independent once again, after 1911 when the United States Government broke up the Tobacco Trust. The IRS tobacco and snuff tax requiring tax stamps be placed on the product packaging was initially implemented in 1901, and effectively repealed in 1966.
