For sale is a mid-century UNION LEADER TOBACCO TIN made by the P. Lorillard Company. This red lithograph tin with a hinged lid is very good condition with great graphics and features the iconic Union Leader Eagle. The tin measures about 4 1/4 inches by 3 inches by 1 inch. This tin has remnants of tax blue internal revenue tax stamp. In 1901, the IRS started requiring tax stamps to be placed on the tobacco product which continued until 1966. A great tobacco collectible tin.
Union Leader tobacco was a leading cut plug tobacco manufactured by Pierre Lorillard, a French immigrant who began making snuff in New York City in 1760. Tobacco tins were commonly used by miners who would chew tobacco instead of smoking it due to the fire risk. Shortly after 1890, the P. Lorillard Co. Inc. was absorbed by American Tobacco Co. It became independent once again, after 1911 when the United States Government broke up the Tobacco Trust. The IRS tobacco and snuff tax requiring tax stamps be placed on the product packaging was initially implemented in 1901, and effectively repealed in 1966.
